a) About JEDU-Treasures database
The JEDU-Treasures is an online database project devoted to written Hebrew sources concerned with Jewish Education from the Middle Ages until the advent of modern education at the beginning of the Twentieth century. JEDU database contains texts from Halakhic Literature, Responsa, Homiletics, Jewish Thought, Polemics, Pinkasei Kehilot (Community), Approbations (Haskamot), Sermons, (Derashot), Periodical literature and more.
JEDU-Treasures has been developed under the joint auspices of the Schocken Institute of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and the The Dov Rappel Center for Jewish Educational Thought of Lifshitz Teacher's College in Jerusalem. The JEDU-Treasures project is dedicated to advance and promote research for the study of the history of Jewish Education. This project focuses on three distinct sources: 1 Unpublished literary fragments and Hebrew manuscripts. 2 Rare books and out-of-print publications. 3 Out-of-print Hebrew journals and newspapers published until 1914. Our overarching goal is to preserve, document and annotate sources related to Jewish Education. Through the JEDU-Treasures database we intend to empower and equip a new generation of students, scholars, educators and academic institutions with resource material related to the history of Jewish Education The database includes:
b) Background and Chronology
The following publications form an integral part of our project.
a) 1925-1943 Publication of Professor Simcha Assaf's Mekorot le-toldot ha-Hinukh be-Yisrael (A Source Book for the history of Jewish Education from the beginning of the Middle Ages to the Period of the Haskalah. b) 2000-2002 Publication of a newly edited and annotated edition in three volumes of Mekorot le- toldot ha-Hinukh be-Yisrael under the sponsorship of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and the Lifshitz College in Jerusalem. This work includes a new introduction, extensive indexes, a comprehensive bibliography on the history of Jewish education and maps of the centers of Jewish education. c) 2004 Production of Jedu Database: Mekorot Sources for the History of Jewish Education on CD-ROM. This is the first attempt to generate a database on CD-ROM dedicated to the history of Jewish education. d) 2006 Publication of new Mekorot le-toldot ha-Hinukh be-Yisrael (Volume 4): Responsa from the Lands of Islam and the Ottoman Empire (16th-20th century); Shmuel Glick, editor. This book includes 330 newly published Responsa dealing with Jewish Education. e) 2006 The Dov Rappel Jewish Textbook Bibliographical project is integrated into the JEDU-Treasures data and image base. It includes annotated bibliographical notes and facsimiles of title pages of more than 1,500 Textbooks from the advent of printing until Jewish Education in modern times; edited by Rabbi Yehuda Bitti. f) 2007 Publication of new Mekorot toldot le-toldot ha-Hinukh be-Yisrael (Volume 5), Shmuel Glick, editor; including 230 new sources on the history of Jewish Education based on articles found in 19th century Hebrew periodical literature. c) Project Leaders
The Schocken Institute for Jewish Research
The Schocken Institute is devoted to innovative research activities in Jewish Studies. The Institute traces its beginnings to 1936, when Zalman Schocken brought his word-class library to Palestine. Over the years the institute expanded its scholarly mission and output and has published important works in Talmudic and Rabbinic literature, Jewish custom, Jewish education and a bibliography Thesaurus of the Responsa literature published from ca. 1470-2000. The facilities of the Institute are located in Jerusalems Rehavia neighborhood, housed in the historical building designed by the acclaimed Bauhaus architect, Eric Mendelsohn. Lifshitz College The Lifshitz Teacher`s College plays a central role in promoting religious Zionist education in Israel. The leading educators and philosophers of the national-religious public have studied and taught within its walls. At present it continues to fulfill this historic role in developing the unique philosophy of state-religious education in Israel and Jewish education through out the world. The college offers a wide range of academic departments and trains Jewish studies and science teachers. The Dov Rappel Center for Jewish Educational Thought was established in 1995 as a joint initiative of the Lifshitz College and the Religious Education administration. Its goals are to emphasize Jewish Philosophy in the training of senior educators in the field of Jewish education. Staff
